Mahalo for supporting Hawai’i food sovereignty! A portion of this purchase supports local organizations that are working to strengthen food security in our communities, help Hawai’i achieve food sovereignty, and restore native Hawaiian foodways.
This beautiful original design by local artist (@jenuine_leigh_art) embodies the goals, values, and vision of North Shore Nutrition (@nutritionwithaloha), and includes the following elements:
- ‘Ulu (Breadfruit): One of the “canoe crops” brought to the islands by Polynesian voyagers. ‘Ulu was a primary food source and has great potential for decreasing reliance on imported food. Symbolic of Hawai’i food sovereignty movement
- Kalo (Taro root): Another canoe crop that was central to native Hawaiian culture. Symbolizes cultural preservation and connection
- Olena (Turmeric): Used to cure many ailments in ancient Hawai’i and still valued for its medicinal and culinary applications. Symbolizes health and longevity
- Naupaka: Endemic to Hawai’i, helps to prevent beach erosion. Symbolizes conservation
