Nutrition With Aloha: What I'm About

The media, pharmaceutical companies and even medical professionals have done a great job of convincing the American public that nutrition is complex, very scientific and far too complicated for the layperson to grasp. While there certainly exists a highly-complicated and fascinating interplay that takes place within our bodies every time we ingest food, simple questions about what to eat need not warrant the current level of mystique, misinformation and ambiguity that constantly bombards us.

Nutrition is science-based. That fact cannot be overlooked. But the irony is that we seem to have taken a wrong turn when we began to apply a scientific and mechanistic approach to nutrition. When we steered away from time-tested food traditions in favor of highly-engineered meals; when we gave up natural, whole foods in favor of a reductionist approach; when we began engineering our food in a lab the same way drug companies engineer pills. This is not the way nature intended and it's no wonder we're completely confused about what we should actually be eating.

So where does that leave us? Americans are sick, and our diets are largely to blame. The vast majority of chronic diseases in America can be prevented with proper diet.

My goal is to break down this artificial facade and take us back to a time when we ate whole foods. We ate with the seasons. We didn't spray toxic chemicals on our food. We didn't strip the soil of nutrients. We ate food that was grown or raised in the same zip code. We took time to enjoy home-cooked meals with people we love. Most importantly, we recognized the connection between quality food and health.

Here in Hawaii, we have a year-round growing season and endless varieties of plants that thrive in our fertile soil. Let me help you recognize the abundance that awaits you in your own community, and the enormous health benefits to be gained from supporting these local farms. I am focused on improving the health of our local community through high quality, natural, sustainability grown whole foods.
